Day 348

Day 348

A thousand forest kindergartens

The first private outdoor kindergarten opened in Stuttgart, Germany in the 1950s. It's fitting since the word Kindergarten comes from the German meaning children and garden. This seed of Rudolph Steiner’s vision of learning has grown across Europe, especially in the Scandinavian countries. There are around a thousand forest kindergartens in Denmark alone.

Teachers are taking math, language and physics out into nature. They flip abstract ideas into practical experiences like measuring trees and observing first hand the effect seawater has on ships.

Learning outdoors leads to improved academic skills and children with behavioural challenges benefit. The children of the forest schools are thriving and are better able to cope with the unpredictability of daily life.
