Day 346

Day 346

How can something so large have gone unnoticed for so long?

Measuring 34 meters wide, 32 meters long and 5.5 meters high, with a circumference of 183 meters, this 300 year old sea creature can be seen from space. Yet it was only just discovered.

This giant coral family look like rippling waves and seem to mirror the surface of the ocean. The coral was found in Three Sisters island group of the Solomon Islands which are known for their diverse coral communities.

“Just when we think there is nothing left to discover on planet earth, we find a massive coral made of nearly one billion little polyps, pulsing with life and color,” — Enric Sala, National Geographic Explorer
