Day 337

Day 337

Shhhhhh

Quiet…true quiet…is becoming a rare commodity. Acoustic ecologist Gordon Hempton has been looking for the natural quiet places of our planet. He is the co-founder of “Quiet Parks International (QPI), a nonprofit dedicated to putting natural quiet within reach of as much of the world’s population as possible by certifying and protecting peaceful places.”

One of the places that they certified was Yangmingshan National Park, a 43-square-mile area in one of the most densely populated places on earth. It is the world’s first Urban Quiet Park. But the quietest natural place on earth is the crater at Haleakalā National Park in Maui. In a Smithsonian Magazine article, Tony Perrottet says of this place…

“…the silence is absolute. Not a breath of wind. No passing insects. No bird songs. Then I thought I detected drumming. Was it the ghostly echo of some ancient ritual? No, I finally realized, it was my own heartbeat, thundering in my ears.”
