Day 302

Day 302

The earth was ringing for 9 days

Seismologists didn’t know what to make of this strange signal that showed up on their instruments as a smooth wave similar to a single low note. They called it an unidentified seismic object, or USO.

It took a team of 68 international scientists to figure out the source of the signal. They traced it to the Dickson Fjord on the east coast of Greenland. A landslide sent 25 million cubic metres of rock and ice into the deep waters, creating a wave the height of a 30-story building. The tsunami shook the entire earth for nine days.

“This is the first recorded event where a condition in the atmosphere affected ice, which moved a mountain, caused water to move, and shook the entire globe of the Earth.
