Deep fried maple leaves
In Minoh City in the fall when Japanese maples turn from green to golden yellow, locals relish a sweet treat made from the leaves of the trees. The leaves are aged in salt for a year and deep fried in a sweet tempura batter.
This delicacy is a symbol of the region and not likely to be found anywhere else. The locals call maple snacks momiji, which means “becomes crimson-leaved.” The word also translates literally to “baby’s hands”
