Dolphins can feel electricity
As much as we know about our Dolphin friends, we’ve discovered something new. In addition to their keen vision and exceptional hearing, they can sense electrical fields—which may help them find food in murky waters or buried beneath the ocean floor.
Electroreception is common among fish, but the only mammals that have this super power besides the bottlenose and Guiana dolphins are the platypus and short-beaked echidna.
“Dolphins will dig into the sediment up to half a meter when hunting, limiting the usefulness of vision and echolocation. This electric sense might help them detect and snap up buried fish.”
