The Great Wood of Caledon
The wild of Scotland was once covered by Caledonian pine. Ancient Romans called it “The Great Wood of Caledon.” These wild trees were home to creatures such as the Highland tiger, wolf, lynx, and bear. By the turn of the 20th century, only 5 percent of Scotland’s land area was covered by forest.
Now Scotland is in the midst of a movement to rewild the lands. Bringing back the ecosystems to their natural uncultivated states with wilderness spreading across the country, will make Scotland the first rewilded nation in the world.
