Day 69

Day 69

Penguin Love

When a Brazilian man, Joao Pereira de Souza, went out to the coast looking for fish, he found instead a penguin, covered in oil and in distress. He took him home, cleaned him and nursed him back to health.

South American Magellanic penguins must return to Patagonia, 5,000 miles away. Pereira took Dindim, (Portuguese for “ice pop”) back to the ocean and taught him how to swim again. He set him free, not thinking he’d ever see him again but Dindim returned 11 months later and stayed for a month. He continued to visit Pereira, year after year, for more than a decade.

“Pereira and Dindim share a bond that bridges human life and the natural world. Their friendship is hope personified.”
