Day 68

Day 68

This light seed is in celebration of International women’s day.

Born at a time when women lived in harems and wore veils in public, Huda Shaarawi did a lot for the women of her country and of her time. She founded the first philanthropic organization run by women. opened a school for girls, and in 1919, she organized the largest women’s protest against British rule. She was most famous, however, for defying the Egyptian rule by removing her veil in front of a crowd in Cairo. After the initial shock, the crowd cheered and some women joined her in removing their veils. Within a decade, few women in Egypt still wore the veil.
