Day 36

Trash becomes treasure

In the 1950s, residents of Fort Bragg, California used the local beach as a dump for their unwanted garbage. Eventually, the beach was closed down to further dumping. Left to nature, the discarded glass was polished by the waves and transformed into gems. This sparkling, colourful shoreline came to be called Glass Beach.

Once a place to dump unwanted garbage, Glass Beach became a treasure trove of transformed trash. Though people now covet the very things that were once thrown away, the beach is protected and removing the glass is prohibited.
