Day 353

Day 353

Fire Gazing

Trataka is the ancient Ayurvedic practice of candle gazing. It is said to increase cognitive performance and focus, improve memory and spatial attention, as well mental health, eye heath and sleep quality. A 15th-century Sanskrit manual on yoga says that gazing steadily at a flame “till the eyes are filled with tears” could help cure eye diseases. (Check with your health care provider before trying this).

Modern studies show that watching the naked flames of a fire (for as little as 15 minutes a day) helps us to feel more relaxed and calm. The heat that a fire gives off is not only warm and comforting but it increases blood flow, making it anti-inflammatory. A 2014 University of Alabama’s study found that even watching a DVD of a roaring fire can help people to relax.

Now I understand why I’m so drawn to the fireplace channel—my intuition is on fire.
