Day 321

Day 321

An old yarn

It turns out that Neanderthals were not as simple as we once thought and they may not have died out because Homo sapiens were smarter. There's evidence that they made glue, nursed their elders, could laugh at a good joke, wore jewelry and created art. Most recently it was discovered that they could make yarn.

A fragment of string, between 41,000 and 52,000 years old, was discovered at an archeological site in Abri du Maras, France. The string was made from three bundles of fibre that had been twisted together and attached to a stone tool. This level of technology suggests that they may have been making clothes, rope, mats and nets.
