Food that would have been wasted
Valentin Thurn was raised by parents who grew up during World War II and who understood the importance of not wasting food. It is these values that inspired his documentary Taste the Waste, about the 90 million tons of food Europeans throw away each year—up to half of fruits and vegetables picked at harvest time—a phenomenon that costs the European economy more than $130 billion every year.
He co-founded FoodSharing.de, a nonprofit organization whose goal is to prevent large amounts of produce, bread and other perishable food from being thrown away. In the first 18 months, 41,000 people signed and 40 tons of food have been given away in more than 240 cities across Germany.
